Crux (2023) is an experimental performance panel and installation from New York-based composer, choreographer, and sculptor Kinlaw. With this project, Kinlaw pushes the process of communication and process to a place of curiosity encouraging their audience to play and explore.
This new work is an innovative take on an artist lecture which uses choreography, controlled feedback systems, sound sculpture, and the movement of speakers to generate a real-time audio composition all while upending and reimagining traditional conceptions of what is expected from an artist talk, a panel discussion, or a performance. The stage design of this artist lecture is fundamental to the flow of the conversation. Kinlaw, alongside selected artists and philosophers of varying practices, work in tandem with the stage design and sculptures to respond to each other on the panel as well as take questions from the audience in real-time.
Kinlaw is an audio composer, choreographer, and sculptor based in New York who is known for large scale performances and building choreographic frameworks which accommodate and respond to the liveness of space.
Kinlaw’s performance works have been featured in several New York City museums and arts institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1, the New Museum, Pioneer Works, and Mana Contemporary. In 2022, Kinlaw was a Pioneer Works Musician-in-Residence, as well as a member of New Inc at the New Museum, with work focusing on Experiments in Art and Technology and psychoacoustical research at Bell Labs. They are part of the Otion Front establishing team, having curated works, residencies, and experimental performances since 2015.
